Salisbury Steak With Mashed Potatoes & Gravy
Simple, hearty comfort food with juicy Salisbury steaks, savory onion and mushroom gravy, and creamy homemade mashed potatoes the whole family will love.
Ingredients
Salisbury Steak
- 2 lbs Ground beef
- Salt & pepper to taste
- Garlic powder to taste
Onion & mushroom gravy
- 1 Medium onion, sliced or diced
- 8 oz Mushrooms, sliced
- 1 Your favorite packaged gravy, prepared according to package directions
Mashed potatoes
- 4-5 Medium potatoes, peeled & cut into chunks
- 1/2 Stick butter
- 1/2 cup Milk or cream
- Salt/pepper to taste
Method
- Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain well.
- Dump potatoes into a large bowl, add your butter, milk or cream and salt/pepper. Mash well, I use a handheld kitchenmaid mixer to make them super creamy but you can leave them a bit lumpy if you prefer. Place in the oven or microwave covered, to keep warm.
- Season the ground beed with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Make patties. Heat a skillet with oil on medium heat. Add the patties to the skillet and nicely brown both sides and cook until internal temperature reaches 160F. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add a bit more oil or butter and then add your onions and mushrooms. Cook until softened and golden, scraping up all those flavorful browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Prepare your favorite packaged gravy according to the package directions and pour it into the skillet with the onions and mushrooms.
- Return the salisbury steaks to the skillet and spoon the gravy over the top. Let everything simmer together for about 5-10 minutes so the steaks soak up some of that gravy.
- Pile those creamy, buttery mashed potatoes onto your plate, top with a salisbury steak (or two), and spoon on plenty of the mushroom, onion gravy over top. Enjoy!
