Gluten Free Sugar Cookies
5 from 2 votes
Soft, buttery gluten-free sugar cookies are perfect for Christmas baking. Made with simple pantry ingredients, they roll out easily, hold their shape, and bake up tender with crisp edges. Decorate with festive icing and sprinkles for a classic holiday treat everyone can enjoy!
Method
- In a small bowl combine gluten-free flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
- In a large bowl, mix butter and sugar until combined. Add egg and vanilla extract and mix until thoroughly combined. Then add flour mixture and mix until fully incorporated.
- Shape dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator.
- Meanwhile, preheat oven to 325°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
- Remove dough from refrigerator and turn out onto work surface. I like to cut my dough into four pieces and work with one piece at a time. Glute free dough can be a bit crumbly and I find when I try to roll out the whole dough ball at once, it doesn't work out so well. Quartering the dough and working with one at a time, works great!
- Roll dough out to 1/8 inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place on prepared baking sheets.
- Bake cookies until edges are slightly golden, about 15-18 minutes. Let cool completely before decorating.
- While cookies cool, prepare your icing. Add powdered sugar to mixing bowl, then add the milk, mix well until you get the desired icing consistency that you like for cookies. Don't worry, you can always add a bit more milk or powdered sugar as needed to get the desired thickness. For decorating Christmas cookies, you don't want your icing to be too runny.
- If desired, separate your icing into different bowls and color with food coloring.
- Ice cooled cookies with icing and immediately decorate with sprinkles. Enjoy!

Can’t wait to take these to Christmas as I have a nephew who is gluten intolerant Thanks again for sharing!! Merry Christmas to the Watson Crew!
What was the stuff u mentioned using for food coloring for ur cookies. I thought u said it was called angel dust. I tried to find on amazon n couldn’t find. Love watching ur show.
Hi! It’s called Pixie dust dye free food coloring powder set! 🙂
We’re not gluten intolerant couldn’t I just use regular flour in your recipe?
I can’t really answer that for you because I don’t substitute GF flours with regular. The grains used for GL flour blends are completely different than regular flour. The textures is different, how it acts during baking is different. So I couldn’t guarantee the outcome. Doesn’t hurt to give it a try though and see! 🙂
